Energy City Qatar
Doha, Qatar

Energy City Qatar is a master planned business development to be located in the new city of Lusail, just north of Doha, Qatar on the Arabian Gulf. The ECQ Headquarters building will be the hub of activity for the development which is planned as a center for businesses involved in the energy industry in the Middle East.

This three building headquarters project is to be the focus and beacon for the entire business development. Each building houses a different function critical to the operation of the overall ECQ development. The project will include a Corporate Office Center, a Banking Center with Trading Floor and the region’s first tier 4 IT/Data Center. Connecting the building components will be a large atrium space giving the project a campus feel and providing spaces for interaction between the individuals doing business at Energy City Qatar.

The project will utilize multiple sustainable technologies to achieve a LEED Gold certification. Strategies for sustainable design include thin-film photovoltaic modules integrated into the exterior enclosure, wind towers to aid the building’s environmental contol systems, passive solar shading, use of indigenous landscaping and other environmentally sensitive design strategies.

Concept description

Design studies for the atrium space and the elements which define the space have been carried out through the use of physical models, computer generated models and detailed design drawings. The main elements will be the second level bridge and the custom tension membrane roof. This important space will provide connection between each of the buildings and will act as the main gathering social space for the entire ECQ development.

The design for the exterior enclosure of the project required many means of study and analysis. Detailed design drawings, a full-size window wall mock-up, refined physical models and computer generated 3D models were used to refine the design. Additionally, computer modeling and analysis was used to study the energy performance of the enclosure.

This high-technology enclosure system will provide the building inhabitants with a comfortable inviting enviroment throughout the year.

The elevator lobby/stair tower cores for the three individual buildings are designed to be hightechnology design elements as well as providing necessary vertical circulation. Recalling the design ideas behind the project, these elements will consist of layered steel structures with discreet openings for access. In addition to containing the vertical circulation, atrium towers will be used for critical air circulation and environmental control.

The main elements will be the second level bridge and the custom tension membrane roof. This important space will provide connection between each of the buildings and will act as the main gathering social space for the entire ECQ development.

Materials/boards research description

Energy City Qatar restrooms are clad in natural volcanic stone in different tones and textures. The bathrooms have a simple modern aesthetic with horizontal grains running throughout the space, in all the materials.

Energy City Qatar Corporate Office Lobby is a two story space with access to the atrium space and a lounge area. The floors and walls are natural volcanic stones of slightly different tones and textures. The walls are also back-coated white glass, and the main entry desk is constructed of layers of stacked glass which is then back-lit to give the desk an even glow. The lobby is enclosed by a point-supported glass skin, making the space bright and transparent.

A ground breaking ceremony for the Energy City Qatar Corporate Headquarters was held in Lusail/Doha Qatar on February 2, 2009. The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the design for this important building. Attendees on hand for the ceremony included The Qatar Minister of State for Energy and Industry Affairs, HE Dr Mohammad bin Saleh al Sada, Energy City Chairman Issam Janahi, and Energy City Qatar CEO Hisham al Emadi, along with other dignitaries.
